This personal project centers on creating an ampersand in my unique style. I developed this artwork as part of The Big Ampersand Community’s fun welcome challenge, designed to introduce us to the group and spark creativity. I think many lettering enthusiasts are somewhat obsessed with ampersands because of the many ways you can draw them and the symbolism of union and community they represent.
I absolutely adore Gemma O’Brien’s art! Her work is truly breathtaking, with a wonderful emphasis on elegant letterforms and lively, vibrant illustrations. I love creating and illustrating custom letterforms myself, and my final piece is inspired by both her incredible art and her SkillShare class, Illustrated Lettering: Drawing Intricate Floral Forms. Of course, I also added my personal touch. My aim was to craft a piece that celebrates my style and showcases what I can do—especially in my favorite style: detailed, illustrative lettering.
The result is a striking piece in a bold, detailed style suitable for murals, posters, book covers, and editorial headlines. This style is designed to grab attention!
